Nah. Joker's not goth, but that pic of the girl sure is. Creepy and beautiful at the same time. Harlie's not goth, either. Your typical goth gets a bit upset with the whole goth/emo confusion. It is especially bad when someone labels the music you listen to as emo when it is not. Luckily as there are neither many emos or goths around these parts, that problem doesn't occur very often.

He's the "edgy" one.

I don't get the bloke(?) wearing pink and black striped leggings.

I'll have to hold my hands up now and admit to wearing green and black striped stockings back in the day, but I never had them on show like that.

I think all the cords around shirtless one jr. is his headphones. I know I can get pretty tangled up in mine.

They must be cheap 99c store headphones, hence the tubes of solder so he can fix them on the fly.

Lookit Hitler Jnr. at the back with his Charley Manson button and 'Fed flag. Don't mess with him, or his hair.

His belt buckle is of the Confederate flag. Does that mean he supports slavery? If so, he must be the slave since that would explain the collar.

I can't help feeling like Emo is just a bunch of teenagers getting together and saying "ooo, I know, let's wear weird clothes and act a bit moody and call it something" without realising it was all done twenty years ago already.

Speaking emo foolishness: Through the haze of my hangover this morning, I half watched the Hollyoaks omnibus- they're getting a thriving emo community on there...

Yeah, Emotional Hardcore dates back to the mid to late '80s. The punk scene in Washington DC was known for rather overly emotional frontmen. This scene influenced Grunge is the Seattle area. Grunge dies down in popularity and evolved into the emo of today.

I must be getting old as I look at the younger generation and think to myself, "What the hell are you wearing? And your music is crabs."

To be fair, most of the emo jokes started within the emo community. Sadly, other cultures, mainstream mostly, have picked up on these jokes to put emos down (including me from time to time).

Jawbox is the only music I have on my iPod that is definitively emo. They are the original '80s emo from DC.

In the clip you can see the emo style of overly emotional response to the music. Great track, though, for the style.

I don't have the flashy toed boots. My stompers are a bit more practical. I've decided on calling myself a sub goth (subdued goth) or basement goth. I don't do the white face or the eyeliner, but I dress in a lot of black and dig on the music and culture (horror, poetry, fiction). Seems the number of sub goths far outweigh the whiteface brigaid from what I see on the web.

What is cool about the strap jacket is that, should I desire, I can attach chains and the like to really goth it up. I may purchase some so that I can go all out undead on Halloween and for concerts. :D`

Of the 26 tracks I recognize only 7 names. 8 if you count the White Lies suggestion you made. I haven't listened yet, but I am looking forward to it. :-D

Good work on the mixtape, Colin!

I was surprised to see the Manics on there, but very good call. Personally, I would have (and have, in the past) chosen 'The Intense Humming of Evil' over 'Die in the Summertime'. 'DitS' is a much more accessible song than 'TIHoE', but the latter is as close to Industrial as the Manics were ever going to get - a friend of mine thought it was Ministry once when they first heard it.

I'l definitely be giving it more than the occasional play :-D

Yeah. I was delighted to hear The Mercy Seat. The band, Stromkern, does a striking cover of that particular track, so it warmed my heart to hear the original. All in all a good showing. Were I to make a mixtape, it would be dreadfully particular. I would have to narrow the genres and then likely go with a track from each year. I tend to get buried in details.

Oh, and while I am here, here is something else gothy.

Image

Angelspit is an aggrotech band from Australia. Very cybergoth. They are currently touring with KMFDM. We see them (or would have seen them) on the 10th of October. I like the monochromatic look of this particular press shot. Normally they feature a lot more red. Like Skinny Puppy, Angelspit has a disdain for the medical community, thinking its methods are barbaric, torturous, and unregulated. Doctor's have too much power over ordinary lives. It is worse with plastic surgeons, who make you feel unattractive, and thus corrupt you into getting unnecessary surgery.

They are featured on Colin's mixtape. :D`

To clarify.

I inclued 'Die in the Summertime' because it is one of my favourite tracks of all time and I felt it fitted in well. I do not think that the Manics themselves are goth/industrial (definitely not since Richey disappeared), but I think that the particular track is 'Dark' enough to be put into the compilation.

Glad you're enjoying it Dave & Matt.
